2016 Facility Work

2016 Facility Work

Following the dirt screening in the fall of 2015, the dirt needed to be put back on the race surface. Rather than putting the dirt back on the very rocky base, we put down landscaping fabric to keep the nicely screened dirt separate from the base layer.

We also took the opportunity to relocate some of the concrete blocks to line the whole North end of the facility and level many off that had been bumped during track builds. We also moved water lines, lined the rest of the perimeter with railroad ties and capped them, cleaned the facility lights, re-angled several, replaced a bulb or two, straightened some of the fencing back out, installed a new heat sheet board, and general facility clean up.

Some of the dirt that was brought in during the 2010 expansion had a considerable amount of rock. That and, the foundation dirt on the track has a lot of rock, led to a very rocky surface of the track. The dirt condition had been poor for many years as the club saved up enough funds to screen all 2,000 yards of dirt. After 5-6 years of saving, the club had saved up enough to hire a contractor and big machinery to come in excavate the dirt to base, then 4-6" more inches, and then screen down to 1/4" minus. The dirt was screened in the fall of 2015.

After approval to update and expand the facility, Darren Hill led the effort to expand and update the facility in early Spring of 2010. He worked with local companies on donations and support for the project. and with minimal available, he still completed the project.

The project included tearing down and building a new drivers stand, removal of existing electrical and installation of all new electrical, pulling up and relocating the West and North fence line, relocated and reset light pole bases, installed light poles, installed 10,000 watts of new lighting, screening original base layer dirt, bringing additional new dirt in, new pipe, and general facility clean up. The primary project team worked every weekend and some weeknights for 3.5-4 months. The project involved many permits and codes to follow.

These are some pictures of the facility condition prior to the 2010 update and expansion. The pictures of the facility condition were used in a presentation built by Darren Hill and presented with Dave Berard to the Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation asking for approval to expand and update. In late 2009 / early 2010 approval was granted.

There are also several pictures of racing at night at the old facilty, and some old Hank Perry 240 photos.
